The “5’s” And The “4’s”

The “5s” and the “4s” are two rival criminal street gang alliances documented primarily on Detroit’s east side. The 5s are identified as Blood-affiliated, while the 4s are Crip-aligned. Available records indicate that the two alliances have been engaged in prolonged and often violent conflict for over a decade.

Both alliances originated from individual criminal street gangs. The 5s trace their formation to the 55 Seven Mile Bloods (55 SMB), an established east-side criminal street gang. The 4s are documented as having been formed in part by the 42 Hustle Boyz (42HB), an east-side criminal street gang historically associated with narcotics trafficking. Conflicts between these founding groups contributed to the broader rivalry between the alliances. Over time, both the 5s and 4s expanded to include multiple generations of members and numerous affiliated offshoots, many of which are regarded as constituent or member gangs.

The “5s” are a Detroit-born Blood-identifying network that originated with the 55 Seven Mile Bloods (55 SMB) on the Eastside. This set helped establish the RedZone Bloods identity and cemented the number “5” as a marker of local Blood affiliation, especially within the 48205 ZIP code (commonly called the RedZone or 4820DIE).

The “5” carries multiple meanings:

  • A Blood identifier with early ties to Sex Money Murder (252).
  • A reference to the 48205 ZIP code.
  • A unifying symbol for dozens of Detroit cliques operating under the 5s umbrella.

As the 5s expanded, many cliques adopted elements of West Coast Piru doctrine and incorporated the five-point star into Detroit’s localized Blood identity. Some groups—such as the HeadBanger Bloods—blended this with Vice Lord and People Nation symbolism, creating hybrid structures unique to the city.

Conflict With the 4s

The 5s developed in direct opposition to the 4s, a Detroit-born alliance rooted in Crip-leaning sets including:

This feud spread across the Eastside, affecting areas such as the RedZone, Linwood, and Warren. While many newer cliques may use “4” or “5” labels without ties to the original conflict, the divide still carries significance for older and legacy groups.

Structure

The 5s operate as a broad street-based nation with more than 30 affiliated cliques. Relations vary—some are closely aligned, others operate independently—but most trace lineage back to 55 SMB and the early RedZone identity.

Examples of 5s-aligned cliques include:

  • 55 SMB (founders)
  • 55 HOBB Squad
  • 55 OverEvenGang (OEG)
  • 55 52
  • 55 700 WaxGang
  • 55 TMB
  • 55 Psykoz
  • 55 DrenchGang
  • 55 50 Zone
  • 55 MG…and additional cliques operating across Detroit and surrounding suburbs.

Common Misconception

“Dropping 5s” is often mistaken as disrespect toward one crew; in practice, it is viewed as a diss toward the entire 5s network. Internal disputes exist, but the number itself still carries collective significance.

Allies: Bloods, Pirus, Vice Lords, People Nation

Rivals: 4s, Crips (ideologically), Gangster Disciples, Folk Nation

The 4s—also referred to as 4Gang, HGH, or 4224—originated as a Crip-rooted alliance on Detroit’s Eastside. Their identity was built around the 42 Hustle Boyz, 24 Boss Hoggs, and 42 Gutta Boyz, who were engaged in early conflicts with the 55 Seven Mile Bloods. These clashes helped define the eventual creation of the 5s Nation.

Over time, the 4s evolved into a citywide Crip-coded alliance. Not all cliques that claim “4” today are part of the original structure—some younger groups adopted the number independently, while others remain tied to the founding sets.

Although Crip-based, the 4s have historically been flexible in their alliances. Certain branches have maintained relationships with Vice Lords, Detroit-born Crip sets, and even some Blood factions, reflecting Detroit’s fluid neighborhood-based gang landscape.

Origins vs. Modern Usage

Original 4224/HGH Alliance:

Modern/Younger Cliques Claiming “4” (not all formally 4224):

  • 1000 TG
  • BTN
  • AOG
  • PJC
  • Exit 218
  • 064
  • 5674 (partial affiliation)
  • STK

A notable offshoot is the MPR Bloods, reported as a prison-based group started by a former 42 Gutta Boyz member, illustrating how 4s influence extends both on the street and inside correctional facilities.

Allies: Detroit-born 4s, Crips, Gangster Disciples, select Blood and Vice Lord cliques

Rivals: 5s Nation, Detroit-born Blood sets

Recent Development

In 2024, the Detroit News reported on a community-led event in which members of both the 4s and 5s participated in a school-based peace effort. While limited in scope, the event was notable given the history between the two networks.
