Hybrid Gangs / Mixed-Affiliation Groups

Detroit’s hybrid criminal street gangs operate outside traditional nationwide gang structures. These groups blend identities—Blood, Crip, Vice Lord, GD, or independent local alliances—based on neighborhood politics, internal history, and personal ties rather than strict national lineage.

Hybrid sets typically form through:

• cross-neighborhood alliances

• street gangs created or named after the death of a member

• splits from larger organizations

• youth-driven street gangs centered around music, social media, or local disputes

Their affiliations shift over time, and members of the same set may claim different identities depending on context, making these groups fluid, decentralized, and difficult to classify under traditional criminal street gang identities, sometimes referred to locally as “cars,” or “cards.”

The following entries summarize Detroit’s most documented hybrid and mixed-affiliation street gangs

DWBI is a citywide street gang alliance comprising multiple independent cliques that broadly identify under Detroit’s local Blood umbrella. Although commonly grouped together, its internal cliques maintain distinct histories, alliances, and conflicts. The network began consolidating around 2014, uniting crews already active for years.

DWBI’s signature hand sign—thumbs down—has become one of Detroit’s most recognizable symbols. Unlike traditional Blood sets outside the city, DWBI’s structure reflects Detroit’s unique local “5” identity.

Internal tensions exist, including longstanding disputes with certain Eastside 5s such as the 50z and 55. Despite the shared Blood identity, neighborhood grievances often outweigh umbrella affiliations.

The crew is characterized by a blend of neighborhood-based identities rather than a single traditional gang lineage. Observers note that members adopt elements associated with Blood-, Vice Lord–, or Crip-leaning affiliations, often depending on personal ties or block-level alliances. RicoMafia’s trajectory is shaped largely by its online presence, where social-media activity, public disputes, and self-branding have contributed to its visibility and to conflicts with various other Detroit street cliques.
